Travel Back to Ancient Rome

Our 1st century Roman fort at Murton Park provides an authentic and engaging backdrop for pupils to explore what life was like as a Roman soldier and citizen.

Through a series of interactive activities, pupils will learn about Roman military training, daily life, and the wider impact of Roman civilisation on Britain.

With exclusive access to the fort, your group will dive deep into history in a way that’s fully immersive, memorable, and fun.

The itinerary

After an introductory talk that sets the scene and introduces the key concepts of Roman life, students will spend the day living and working in our Roman fort.

Activities include:

Military Drills:

Learn essential military skills, including marching and basic drill techniques.

Oil Lamp Making:

Create your own oil lamp and understand its importance in daily Roman life.

Roman Writing:

Learn all about Roman inscriptions and practice your signature on a replica contract

Exploring the Fort:

Navigate through the Roman fort and learn how soldiers lived and worked.

Roman Religion:

Discover the religious practices and beliefs that were integral to Roman culture.

Battlefield Tactics:

Understand how Roman soldiers worked together on the battlefield to become one of history’s most feared fighting units.

This full-day, immersive experience runs from 10am to 3pm.

And yes, pupils can get all dressed up too. In fact, we encourage it and even provide costumes.

What teachers and pupils say

"It was great for our curriculum. We cover a lot of historical enquiry questions and the impact of the Romans of life today so the trip is an excellent way for them to learn more about what Roman life was like. It wouldn’t be possible in school to give such an immersive experience". - Parklands Primary School, Leeds

What teachers and pupils say

"The children absolutely loved the Roman day. It was interactive, engaging and educational. The children were able to participate in a number of activities whilst also feeling like a Roman dressed up. The day was packed full of different things and the activity hosts were exceptional with the knowledge that they knew and how they worked with the children. All children were engaged from start to finish. Thank you so much!". - Buckstones Primary School, Oldham
