Travel Back to the Saxon Age

Our village at Murton Park provides an authentic and engaging backdrop for students to explore what life was like for Saxon settlers.

Through a series of interactive activities, students will learn about Saxon society, their daily lives, and the threats they faced from Viking invasions.

With exclusive access to the village, your group will dive deep into history in a way that’s fully immersive, memorable, and fun.

The itinerary

After an introductory talk by the abbot or abbess, students will learn about where the Saxons came from and why they settled in Britain. They will discuss the societal structure, including the roles of kings, thanes, churls, and slaves, as well as the importance of Christianity.

Activities include:

Candle Dipping:

Learn the traditional method of making candles.

Writing Techniques:

Decorate pages using techniques from the Saxon period.

Saxon Society:

Understand the hierarchy and daily life of Saxon settlers.

Guard Duty:

Learn how to defend the settlement against potential Viking attacks.

Fun Games:

Play a traditional Saxon game that involves matching pairs of numbers and chance.

Under Attack:

Experience a Viking raid and gain insights into the differences between Saxon settlers and Vikings.

This full-day, immersive experience runs from 10am to 3pm.

And yes, pupils can get all dressed up too. In fact, we encourage it and even provide costumes.
