A must-ride attraction, the Derwent Valley Light Railway (DVLR) spans half a mile within our grounds here at Murton Park.
Run (or should we say fuelled?) by passionate volunteers, this visitor attraction is open every weekend from February half term until our Christmas Event. With passenger trains running on most Sundays during this period as well as every day during Bank Holiday weekends (passenger train schedules are subject to safety regulations and weather conditions).
If you are solely visiting Murton Park to ride on our heritage railway then please call before travel to ensure that the train is operating on that day (for the latest updates, follow us @murtonpark).

A quick history lesson
The DVLR officially opened on the 19th of July 1913 and ran for nearly 16 miles from Layerthorpe Station in York to the village of Cliffe Common near Selby.
Although passengers were carried in the early years, this stopped in 1926 and the railway was only used for agriculture before closing in 1981. The DVLR was never nationalised and remained “light” until its closure in 1981.
The only section of railway still in use is the half-mile that runs within our grounds.

Do trains run daily?
Not every day! Trains run on most Sundays and Bank Holiday weekends (Sat-Mon) from February Half Term to December (passenger train schedules are subject to safety regulations and weather conditions).

Can I just visit the railway?
You’re welcome to spend your time at Murton Park however you want – that’s the beauty of our historical grounds! But you still need to purchase an entry ticket to gain access to the DVLR.
Do I need to book my train ride in advance?
Nope, on days the railway is running, simply show up and queue for your ride.
